Why are we Vegetarians??????????

Narayanan got settled in Brussels 1 year back and now he has brought his family from India. He has a son, Ravi, who is a studious 4 year old boy. Today is Ravi's first day at school. Narayanan was anxiously waiting outside the school gate to pick him up from the school.

The bell ran at 3.00 p.m. after two minutes all the kids started rushing out of the school doors. Narayanan saw Ravi running towards him. The moment Narayanan knelt down, took Ravi into his arm and hugged him tightly. Narayanan brushed Ravi's hair and carried him towards the car. They both settled down in the car and fastened their seat belts.

Narayanan: How was your first day at school??? Did you like the school????
Ravi: Appa the school is too big unlike the school in Chennai.... I played in the biggggggg play ground and played...played and played. Teachers are so kind to me....They always smile........I played see-saw with Little Mark.
Narayanan: Hmmmmmmm..... good. What did you learn?
Ravi: Appa today they dint teach me anything. They allowed us to play all the time
Narayanan: That is good... did you eat all the chapattis that mom gave you.
Ravi: phuuuuuuuu... I ate only one. Little Mark ate the other two and I ate his food
Narayanan: What did he bring???? [With a puzzled face]
Ravi: He got something....a..a...a..a.. Chicken!!!!!
Narayanan: Did you eat chicken #$!@#%^!&$#@ its non-vegetarian. How many times did I tell you not to take food from others and now see you have eaten a Chicken?... Oh my god we don’t eat meat.
Ravi: [with an innocent sad look] what is non-vegetarian appa?
Narayanan: Food that is made after killing animals is called non-vegetarian food and food that are made from plants are called vegetarian food. It is sinful to kill living things and eat. In our family we don’t have the practice of eating the food made out of killed living things.
Ravi: But Appa you have also told me that plants are also living things. You also said pulling a plant is like killing it. I don’t see any difference between killing a chicken or plucking vegetable from the plant as both equals killing a living thing. Then why are we Vegetarians?

Just then Narayanan realized that his son was right in a way but he was forced to think a logical answer to justify his sons question.

Few days later, one day morning Ravi plucked some flowers from the plant his mother grew in the balcony and gave it to his mother for the Pooja. Later on the same day Ravi got a small puppy home, which has lost its leg in an accident. Narayanan and Ravi took the puppy to the doctor and nursed it. They decided to inhabit the puppy in their home.

Two years later, one day Ravi was sitting in their balcony and was reading. The puppy was playing next to him near the pot of flowers which was there for 3 years. Narayanan just then came into the balcony and sat near Ravi

Narayanan: Do you remember once you asked why we are Vegetarians?
Ravi: [gave a puzzled look and nodded]
Narayanan: This plant has been here since the day i moved into this apartment. Since then on every Sunday we used to pluck flowers from this plant to offer it to the god. The flower keeps growing even if we pluck. But if you have noticed this puppy came two years back with a lost leg. Till today its leg has not grown. It still suffers in pain. When you kill animals or birds it does an irreparable damage to them. But plants keep growing even if we pluck a portion of them. We don’t kill plants we only take a portion of it and allow them to grow more..... This is why we are vegetarians. Son I leave it to you to make your own choices. But try choosing the one which causes minimum damage.

Troubles Today

"Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi called for a 12-hour strike (Tamilnadu) on Thursday. The Chennai bandh or Tamil Nadu Bandh is called for , to demand a permanent ceasefire in Srilanka where innocent Tamilians are being subjected to war atrocities. On Tuesday night, Chief Minister Karunanidhi issued an appeal and asked all Tamils, irrespective of their political affiliations, to join the strike or bandh."

The above is an extract of the reason for the Bandh on 23-April-2009 in Chennai by the ruling party. This bandh seemed like a political tantrum for me, which focuses more on the election votes rather than the real issue!!

I work for a BPO. What ever goes out of form, we have to stay in form to help our clients across countries after all that's what we have been paid for.....

We made prior plans. Some people decided to stay in office and sleep in the path between the computer bays in which we work. People who had families did not have a choice. So we all returned home on Wednesday late night. On Thursday most of us rushed to the office before 6.00 A.M. It was very difficult for people who worked in European shifts who left office at 1.00 A.M and returned at 5.30-5.45 A.M just because they had kids and husband at home to take care. There were also some people like me who had the guts to travel in our own vehicle and reaching office before 10.00 A.M.

When i set my two wheeler on road, I fouled.. almost 90% less traffic than it used to be in the morning. Most of the shops were closed. There were no traffic signals too..... it is a silent protest by the machines as well...Obviously controlled by the government...When I reached office I saw all others so excited about their travel on the day. We were not able to focus on work. All we did was to talk about this pointless bandh.

It was lunch time. We were all given token. We accepted it, Swam into the cafeteria where we found hundreds of others stating to get the food before its gets over. We all stood in line. It took 20 mins to get the food plate in hand. I ended up eating till the plate was clean as we may not receive good food until 6 atleast. Hmmm....i am not against tolerance but i am against victimising...

Strike is a democratic way to put forward their demands, yes its a text book definition.Political parties entering strike, whom they are trying to convince...you, me or the entire world , war started 30 years back, various solutions were worked, numerous agreements were signed in Srilanka and was broken..

What we need is a solution, what we need is peace, safety and a trouble free land for the minorities living in our neighbouring country, One day strike is going to do nothing except some visibility and an additional point for the politicians during their campaign.

LETS USE LESS STRIKE..STRIKE LESS NATION IS AMBITIOUS

A Hare and a dog story..... made me to write again after 3 yrs....

Yesterday, I was waiting at the Dentist clinic I happened to lay my hands on a local Tamil magazine. I browsed through to find my small stories which I am always fond of. I found a short story on a hare and a dog

There was a small hare that lived among the bushes in a forest. One day the hare decided to go to the town that was near the forest. The hare made it start in the morning from the forest and came out to the town road. It was admiring the people, cycle, houses and so on. The hare was walking around the town silently hiding in the trees which it found on the way to avoid attraction from people. All of a sudden a dog came from nowhere. When this dog saw the hare it started chasing it. Hare realized that his life is now in danger when it saw the ferocious wowing dog. So the hare started running gaining its full strength in its legs. The dog chased the hare. Every time the hare missed the dog just in seconds and reached the forest and it ran into the forest. The moment the dog reached the brim of the forest it was tired. Also the dog was not ready to enter into a new arena to catch the hare. So it returned back to the town.

The above story is just a simple children tale. But it conveyed a meaning to me. The hare was in a life or death situation while for the dog it was just another food. If not hare it would have been a cat for the dog. That made the difference in their destiny. Though we all know the moral of this story we all choose to forget it unless told again. This reiterated the known fact that a person should run with the correct speed, time and determination to win in life.

After I came home I finished some of the work which I procrastinated from the past. It also made me to re-visit my blog.
When I visited my blog back....Gosh.... almost 3yrs since I wrote nothing. This made me think if I have lost my creativity/language/thinking..... Answer that my mind said was that I lacked determination to pen down my thoughts. So I penned this story to motivate myself in the future.

Alchemist

When my hands moved on the book ‘Alchemist’ by some said

“Hey this is a life changing book, don’t miss it” some said

“It is one among good philosophy books that will inspire your life” and

The negative comments are of no exception, who said “it’s the usual jaba-jaba….no use”. None of these comments stopped me or induced me to take the book with a perception on any side.

This is what I said to my mind when I started to read “any philosophy book requires reading it without prejudice and only this reading will reveal what kind of book it is for an individual”

The story starts by introducing a shepherd called Santiago and describes about the way he chose to go around the world and visit many places, the changes that happens in his life and how he finds his destiny and how he at last attains it by crossing many obstacles. The messages and moral are spun around the story of Santiago by Paulo Coelho.

I like stories with moral than plain moral. The book satisfied this feature till the end. The book left many incidents to the reader’s perception. The reader has to interpret what the author is trying to say. This gave room to interpret it in many ways when I read it each time with different mind set. This was advantageous because the reader have to search and get the meaning from the words rather than the author giving one particular interpretation.

The whole book moves around one simple concept “reaching ones destiny is tough and it requires dream and courage”. Paulo Coelho has shown his dexterity in writing especially in the way he has built upon the story step by step.

The book’s second half stresses that love will never stop a person from attaining his destiny. If it does so then it’s the mistake of the person’s and not because of his love.

The purity of love and the way Santiago and Fatima fell in love reminded me the incidents described by Valmiki about Rama and Sita’s first meeting.

The language of the World and Soul of the World is well described. Also the way to control our constantly speaking mind is put forth in a lay-man’s language.

To have a light reading and gain more.....Alchemist is the right choice

The Game of Three

That was the day,
When I noticed it, filled with dust at one corner of my room....
Resting for days…. and yrs....
Without any care taken

I moved my hands on it,
With g8 passion and
My mind started traveling back to the days,
When it was one among the heavy baggage that I carried to school...
The one that kept me brisk and
Filled my dress with sweat and tiredness....Every evening – my shuttle bat

It has been days and yrs…………
Since I landed my hands on it...
Feel its glory and shine....

It was on the fourth Monday of the winter that passed...
I touched it,
Cleared the signs of untouched days,
Smelt it and mounted it on my bike to take it on a new journey......
To celebrate a special occasion.....
To celebrate yet another day,
To be kept in memory throughout my life,
To treasure a new event in my books,
A game played by the three

It was the day when we three joined together to play a game of shuttle....

All set....
2 bats and a cock...
We all marched,
As though marching to battle with each other,
On the stairs leading to terrace

It was bliss to smell the fresh air away from city automobiles –
In the evening

We started shaking our hands to greet each other...
We agreed to take turns and play.

Here we took the ground...
Me and bhyravi (bhy)
The game of serious play with 10 points....

Here came the natures play...
Moving the cock here, there and everywhere,
Where we dint expect...
We crossed the boundaries drawn,
To hit the cock
We neglected the net...
The whole game played on a stage of comedy,
Where bhavatharini (bhava) landed up on the over head tank –As a cork girl
But bhava was given only two chances to prove her duty...
And all came to an end when we two hit the ground.

Still not an end....
bhava got down with her monkey crawling technique from the tank
[Seemed to be a really monkey show...sorry bhava]
Took the bat and cock.....
Running and pulling us from the floor....to play with her
She played all tantrums to make us get back to the court,
But in vain

She at last hit the cock hard in the air with the bat,
That flew away to the next compound,
We two denied to get the cock…so did bhava
The game came to an end......but not our friendship

May wonder not, y I am writing this after 3 months since the event happened.....
It’s this day I took a ride back to day we three played.
